man i'm so tired now...

monday was NP cheers soft launch, then tues was my sister's wedding, was busy the whole day, then wed was the setup at blss and rushing for lecture by KOH POH TEE, and today was the final event plus rushing for french lesson PLUS meeting for cheers.

slept less than 10 hours for these 4 days. but when the event is over i am like so happy cos it means one thing less off my schedule...phew..

but it's really worth it kk. (although u guys kept complaining that the tags i made are ugly. hur hur.. :P)

anyway i am just here to say BIG thank you to ALL OF YOU who came and play a part in this event (shan't really go into detail cos what i wanna say, johnny already did in his naggy long post :P) .

but however there are still one person that i need to thank a bit more than anyone of u, and that is still johnny :) Liked mentioned before this entry, he really did a ULTRA fabulous job when i was away. If he didn't promised me to take over when i was busy, i think team SDG will lose our momentum totally. which i feel that it would be a waste when we had already came so far..

so thank you johnny for keeping us alive! (lols are u touched, john? ) haha..

okay okay i typed so much, i'm f**king (cencored by Max to maintain family friendliness of this blog) tired alreadyyyy. i can scold all sorts of bad words now.. haha..

Anymore events?

I kind of like to run this kind of events, lol... although the preparations and all that is tedious...

but seeing the kids laughing and enjoying themselves in the event... it's priceless... =)

Chee Hao is good, although during training he's like very fearful of what's his next move, his line and all that... but now he just go on the stage naturally and "say what i want to say la". And i like the idea of the FREEZE!

The gamemasters were cool too, there's a sudden change of the groupings and they seemed to be able to adjust well to ensure fairness for everyone of them, esp JJ, he managed to get the facis to play with them if the group itself has a lesser number.

Facis were quite zai also, trying hard to act friendly with them at the same time guide them to understand the underlying lessons learnt from the games, early in the morning. Most of you were like ZzZzz but still you managed to conceal it from the students properly so that they won't sian.

For people who lived v far away from boon lay, thank you for waking up darn early and help out in our event. I'm sure you had fun as well, esp seeing the kids having fun.

Thank You, Max, for doing a lot of the preparation for us, training us, help us print stuff, volunteer to provide us refreshments, guided us on how we can effectively get prepared for the event, get us prepared mentally for the event... etc

Thank You, Coleman, for teaching us the constructivism and facilitating skills, when you said it, it was the first time i heard it. As well as appearing in our event, it was morale boosting, actually i tot u will rest at home. hahaz

Thank You, Joe and Jean as well, for being friendly and training us, and putting actionpreneurs' reputation at risk by letting us to run an event under the name. lol.

Thanks BLSS as well, for providing us the students, the venue, the necessary equipment and the trust for letting us to handle the students.

so, who else i din mention... lol... XX, relax... when she came back and handle the preparation, she was like doing everything herself. "who do?" "who's doing it?" XX: "me lor"

My confidence level was acutally quite low during the period when no one was leading the team, XX was on attachment and Bryan was quite busy at times, attendance rate was low, my morale was low as well, MC not very prepared, i dunno if facis understand what are they supposed to do, do they understand the games fully?, full dress rehearsal also not very well rehearsed, meetings sometimes were not as productive... Well, from the results we got... you guys really proved me wrong! hahaha...

well, finally it's over... phew...

lalalala. some updates for u guys, I had things settled with mr chew,

1. we will be granted access to bomb shelter for setup on the 18th oct at 8am ( sounds like we are going there to plant bomb. lols.. )

2. and yes, 19th is the day! event starts at 8am sharp!

3. he promised that aircon will be on, and that the request list that i had given him will be granted as well (except for a few items which i will settle with u guys individually, no worries :) ).

Johnny had settled the evaluation form, number tags, scoresheets and floorplan for us, we just have to print it out. Wei xian had also sent me a list of questions which facis could ask, we need to get that printed out as well.

( for the printing job, john and i wonder if max can lend us the IE office printer please?? hee hee.. cos someone said that the IE office printer is good.. haha.. =x )

anyway, i will make sure everything is on good hand and be done by hook or by crook k? :)

And as for my part, i had already made 'little' name tags for each of u guys, facis as well as game master :) eh. let's put it this way, even if it's ugly u guys must wear okay! :P

on the 18th oct, BS students (those without lecture in the morning) please meet 7.30am SHARPPPP at boon lay control station. as for the LSCT students, please contact max after ur lessons had ended? erm. I put hui nee in charge of this kkkkkk!

Let me give some tips for Game masters... after observing people playing

Rules and instructions to be clear and make sure everyone understands
Diagrams for the games, for easier explanation
If they are not proceeding the game smoothly, "sell" hints to them using time penalties, BUT be fair and treat the same to all the teams
A card writing the body combinations for the game 2, are you being restricted
Don't emphasize on working around the rules at start
Don't be too soft, don't drop too much hints
Game 1, give them some time for them to strategise before the start of both the sets of colours
Game 3, DOMENO, 2 packets as max number of domino tiles
Game 4, Start recording when they touch the domino tiles

Jin Jie, write these combinations down on a card, so that u dun forget, and remember to bring 2 scissors on wed, for them to cut =)

Hi everybody, this is Hui Nee, reporting L!VE from the rehearsal at Ngee Ann Polytechnic, Blk 56-01-03.

Bev, John, Xue Qi, Chee Hao, Jin Jie, Wei Xian, and me came down at 9am to prepare n get ready, after which Joe and Jean came at 10am.

bev here. ho ho. anyw the participants werent here and well pretty much everyone was anxious and nervous abt J&J being here before the participants and how we were goin to conduct the games. so anyw, we did a lil rehearsal of the mceeing and they worked on the partnering part. Joe helped them out and taught them a thing or two abt bringing up the mood to the audience and atmosphere. other than tt, when the games were being conducted, somehow it went alrite with the participants enjoying themselves. thou at the do 'ME' no game, they were a bit sian because they couldnt figure out how to fall all the dominos and yet cover all the white parts. they actually tried means and ways to find loop holes in the rules. nonetheless they followed thru. so now here they are, playing the king of castle.. we ll see how the feedbck session goes.

okay i know this was suppose to be posted up earlier than thursday but noo cuz i am busy with my other organising event.

but anyws still better to update what was done than never.

On wednesday, XX had a meeting with us, John, JJ, Cheehao, Weixian, Wailing and me at the cheers chillout (hot and i mean HOT)spot.

and we came up with a list of things that were needed to buy:
1 pack of poker cards
2 markers
10 notebooks
10 pens
2 whistles

which im sure has been bought except the 2 whistles and markers im not sure.

okay, This coming thursday (12th oct 2006) will be our 'rehearsal for our full dress rehearsal' on the friday.

Max had already helped us book a room, 56-01-02, for the whole day.

So please be there at 10am to rehearsal.

Xian Xu, dun feel bad, we understand that you're on ITP. Since you & Bryan the most gnam ones, he was the best candidate to take over, although he got tendencies to be late, I am convinced he tried to give his best ...

Bryan, to me you and Xian Xu are best jie meis, two are one ... so you leader or XX leader oso same to me. Let us know your roles so that everyone knows how to relate to the both of you, for now we assume that you cover one another.

Chee Hao, you're a VERY important person, pls let us know your availability on the dates stated.

Nervousness

Heys,

Good to see that things are starting to pick up again. Well that's what normally happens when the deadline draws near ;)

Too bad I couldn't join you guys last thursday, cos I was busy giving some new lecturers a hard time. Thursday was the day when all those new lecturers had to do a 10-minute lesson for everyone else to critique.

And almost all of them were nervous. Some were very obviously nervous.

All of them had to learn to manage their nervousness, and not let nervousness affect and cripple them.

One of the lecturers appeared totally confident, but he admitted that he was nervous as well, and he said he handled it by channeling his nervous 'energy' to his presentation. I'm not exactly sure what that means, but maybe it was helpful to some.

As for me, when I'm nervous, I do a couple of things:

1. Before the event, I prepare and prepare and rehearse again and again. The more prepared I am, the less nervous I get. For me, I don't have to rehearse out loud - I usually do some rehearsals in my mind, by imagining myself in the situation.

2. Just minutes before it's my turn, I may get nervous now and then, so I'll just breathe in as deeply as possible, hold my breath a little, then exhale slowly. Controlling your breathing actually has this calming effect.

3a. And when it's finally time to stand up to present or whatever, I'll just let myself be part of the moment, soak in the environment, and tell myself to enjoy myself. It's like when you're pushed into a swimming pool - you can either start treading the water, or just relax and enjoy being in the water. You can float either way, but one way is a lot more enjoyable than the other.

3b. Besides soaking in the environment, I find that physical factors help too, especially posture. When I stand straight, chest out, arms and legs apart, I don't just look confident, I start feeling confident too!

These are just some pointers that I find useful. Hopefully you'll find them helpful as well.

Firstly, i have fixed the date with jean and joe for the trail run to be on next wednesday, 11th Oct, cus i won't be free for next friday.

I had read the blog, thanks Johnny, Max, JJ and Bev for making today’s meeting so fruitful. Special Thanks to Johnny for reporting down to us what is being discussed. :)

With regards to choosing the bomb shelter as a venue to hold our event, it’s a good place cos we don’t have to worry about any disturbance or making any disturbance. =) But I’m a little worry that the stuffiness will cause a little disappointment to both the student and us, cos I had a fair taste of it when we had our choir practices there last time.. and becos of this, I’m afraid that it would cause a ‘no-mood-to-participate’ ambience..

So I’m thinking that the solution to this is to actually borrow a few fans from BLSS, adding on to the list of sound system, tables chairs etc etc. [ let’s settle the ‘to-borrow-list’ soon]

Next, going on to taking away coin salute and reducing the number of students, I think it’s a good idea, Johnny. Like mentioned, we dun have enough manpower, and the area is too small and stuffy for 8 groups of 10 to squeeze together to make the coins stand. Hence, I really would like to vote for a small group of student, let’s say 8 groups of 5, or even 5 groups of 5. Plus if we cut down on the number of students, we would be able to (like what Johnny said,) observe each of them in details. *After all this is our first trial run, plus we really dun have enough man power, I’m afraid that we cannot handle the situation….

Talking about handling the situation, we really need Chee Hao and Xueqi! Humph. I feel that we can’t have them rehearsing just before the rehearsal on the coming Thursday. And personally, I dun support last minute work too. So can I have you guys to meet up with me this coming Tuesday (10/10) to do a few things? :

1) Get the namelist of participate. [for this I promise I’ll go down to sch personally to ask for it. We cannot depend on actionpreneur anymore.]

2) The things that we need to borrow from BLSS.

3) The ppt for the running of the colours on the laptop for Rainbow Dominos. [The ppt die also must be done by then].

4) The ppt for the grouping of students to be flashed, so they know their groupings easily [ but this can be only done after getting the name list, so I may do it personally also].

5) THE MATERIALS and prizes! We are all going to get them at IMM Daiso and IMM giant! [ die also must get. Cannot drag anymore.]

6) Floor plan for the venue- where to put what.

7) Decide on the ACTUAL number of students who is going to participate. [if no one voices out, I’m going to make decisions on my own, by then dun blame me hor… heh].

8) And yes, we are going to rehearse, rehearse and rehearse, helping ourselves as facilitators and the two big EMCEES, Chee hao and Xueqi! Hahaa…

Yup and meanwhile this is my agenda for this coming Tuesday (10/10), and whether I meet my agenda or not, I’m also depending on you people! So please attend the meeting!

Currently I had set the meeting on 10/10/2006 (this coming Tuesday) at 10am, at student plaza (the one at the bus-stop). Any Changes I will inform u guys personally. J

Oh yah, and addressing the attendance problem, I think those who hasn’t been attending has to be ashamed! We are working as a team but only few of them have been attending the meeting so far! Though I have ITP and ‘can be excused’, I feel shameful of myself already. So I’m going to make it up but giving all the best of what I can do!

Max and i went over to blss today, then we've chosen the bomb shelter, beside the bball court, as the venue for our event to take place. Max will post the pictures soon, i hope =) It's quite big and suitable for our event, just that i feel it's a bit stuffy in there, oh ya it's air-conditioned, if i'm not wrong. we need to bring an extension over, because we need 2 laptops for the first game (colour domino), and the area only got one plug. There's a whiteboard at the end of the room, i was thinking letting it to be the scoreboard of the teams, recording down the time taken by each team. (Grouping wise... we need to get the name list asap, then we can grp them)

Some points to take note:

1. (Full rehearsal day) Joe and Jean are not available on the next thursday, so we cannot do a full rehearsal on that day, i was thinking of doing it on friday start at 9 and end at 1 latest, so we can do a little last min work on thursday. And, Joe said he's willing to 'lend' us some of his friends to act as participants, the impt thing is Chee Hao must be around + all the materials needed must be there.

2. (BLSS) Whatever we need from BLSS, email to Joe, eg how many tables, sound system, CDs? (this one i not sure, maybe we bring them ourselves?), name list of the participants, so that he can help consolidate and request from Mr Chew.Mr Chew, DM of BLSS, said that we can reduce the number of students if we cannot handle. Also, the students to be change to sec one and two councilors, we will mix them around =)

3. (The coin issue) Because of the problem of getting coins standing up and students actually crowding around a small area, plus they will need a flat platform for the coins to stand, Max suggested that we do away with the game, making it a 4-games event... That brings me back to the idea of Mr Chew's. Maybe we shrink our target audience by doing away with the coin salute?
Comments? Then, it will be 8 groups of 10 without reducing yet. Because of the shortage of manpower, i'm suggesting to be 8 groups of 5 ? one facis attach to 5 students... so that the behavior of each individual can be observed and then learning points of each students can be drawn out with greater detail. =) Comments?

4. (on that REAL day) we're gonna meet up early, because it's a normal school day for the students over at BLSS, letting them stay back to play our games is kind of bad for them, (if we din manage to run thru it smoothly) We are going to set up the game booths before that day, so it's 18th of Oct, the wed, and the real event will take place at 19th Oct 8am. 7.20 is their assembly time. (Mr Chew was even asking us to start at 7.40, haha) it will roughly end at 1pm, including prize giving, debrief,etc

5. (Attendance) I was a bit shocked by the attendance, nobody told me not coming, want dun go, all dun go la, dun fly me kite leh... lol 3 of us were there, excluding Max. JJ, me and Bev. However, we did quite a lot of stuff, least we got things planned out. Pls... pls... pls... come on thursday and the other day for the full rehearsal with actionpreneur around. Station 1: Rainbow domino
Objectives:
Trust in team members
Understanding team members’ strengths and weaknesses

Instructions:
1. You are to stand in front of a laptop, away from the domino area when viewing the colour sequence
2. You will be shown once only to remember the full colour sequence
3. Using the least possible time, you have to set up the domino tiles in the same colour order
4. Only one representative from the group can request the colour to be shown again at the same speed
5. Domino tiles must be able to fall through at one try, every 5 seconds will be added for a tile unable to fall and another 2 seconds will be added for a wrong position of the tile.
EG. the last three tiles did not fall after a single push, and the team took 1min 25 sec, the recorded time will be 1min 40 sec (1min 25 sec + 3 X 5sec), and if there are 10 tiles being placed in the wrong position, the time will then become 2 min (1min 40 sec + 20 sec)

Station 2: Salute Coins
Objectives:
Manage stress under time
Getting the work done with the least effort through the team
Patience and perseverance

Instructions:
Students will be given 3 mathematical sums per team
They are to form 3 rows of coins added up to be the solution to the sums
Students can work with both the coins and the solutions at the same time
They are to used the fixed given number of coins provided
Not allowed to use personal coins
The 3 rows of coins must be standing together at the same time before they are fall together
All the coins must be able to fall through at one try
Penalty of 15 sec for wrong solution to the question, 2 sec for every coin unable to drop

Game 3: Are you being restricted?
Objectives:
Creativity and innovation
Ability to come up with the best solution in the shortest possible time
Conflict solving

Instructions:
Both teams are given the same number of domino tiles
All the tiles are tied to a string
Game masters will then say out the body parts
All team members are then to tie to the end of the string to the body parts stated
Eg. “Your domino tiles are to tie to… 1 hair, 3 fingers, 4 ears” The team must then tie the domino tiles to 1 hair, 3 fingers and 4 ears and then form them up in a straight line
A straight row of domino tiles are to set up using the shortest possible time
(For the game masters, extra strings can be given to the students if they request for it)
Team members can tie to more body parts but not lesser than what the game masters said
All the domino tiles must be set up standing up before they are being toppled
All tiles must be able to fall through at one try
Penalty of 5 sec for every domino tiles unable to fall

Game 4: DO ME NO
Objectives:
Common goal
Division of labour

Instructions:
Teams are given same number of domino tiles
Students will have to set up a “ME” shape using only domino tiles
The domino tiles are to cover the white area after the fall
(we will be using white paper and tape, to make the white “ME” area)
(for game masters, extra domino tiles can be given only when request is made by the students)
Using only one push, all domino tiles must be able to fall
Time penalty of 5 seconds for every tile unable to fall
The white area of “ME” must be totally covered
Students are not allowed to tear away the white area or do anything destructive to the white paper, heavy penalty of 5min to be added for any teams caught cheating

Game 5: King of the Castle
Objectives:
Working around the rules
Importance of foundation
Integrity

Instructions:
Form a circle of dominos using 80 of the domino tiles
Build a castle of 3 level high using only poker cards within the area of circle of dominos
(For game masters, there are only 75 tiles at both sides, so the teams have to do a simple cheer in order to get 5 more tiles
Let them discover the missing 5 tiles first and when they ask about it at the first time, answer them “don’t know”, second time, demand a good cheer before giving them 5 more tiles)
The wall of domino tiles must be built first before the castle of poker cards
All domino tiles must be able to fall through at one push only after both the wall and castle is set up
Rivalry between kingdoms is allowed
80 domino tiles must be used to form the wall for the castle
A minimum of 3 level high of castle is to set up
Time penalty of 5 seconds for every domino tile unable to fall and time penalty of 20 seconds for incompletion of castle

My I&E Journey

I&E wasn't my first choice... i choose it because i have no choice (i wanted event management)... gt no idea what I&E is all about and i went for the first lesson... the first thing that came to my mind was - the teacher is friendly... then we had some bonding activities...

Attendedthe 2nd lesson not in the classroom but at west coast park... tat is when i start to like tis module... formed our group, played games and we enjoyed our day at west coast park... then we had to start our project - something innovative at the end of the module??? brainstormed for ideas and finally we had one... but in the end the plan failed... so we need help from max and decided to carry our plan B - Food Bazaar...

we start to do the planning for the bazaar and it came out to be a success... and guess wat?? we had come to the end of the module... really thanx max and coleman who accompanied us throughout the journey giving us advices and crapz... the closing speech by coleman was impressive... n thanx god tat i choose tis module coz it really helps me alot for my attachment...

i believe tat at the end of tis module, everyone of us has gain at least a C... Max want us to write something about tis module and i m thinking real hard on wat words to use to describe it.... BEST? FUN? INTERESTING? BRAVO? hmmm..... i think none of the above... no words can describe it, you gotta experience it urself... and i m sure none of us has regret choosing tis module...

Fireworks, from National Day n SFF'06 (Singapore Fireworks Festival). I supposed lots of u went down to view it, just sth to share for those who din see it. Pls click on the photos for a larger view.
This is SFF-Italy(0508). Dam chio. See the colour mixture? Neon White. with some smoke too. but so pretty lah.
LOOK! so many at once, from low to high de. n even the merlion is enjoying the show too.

& yes, examinations are coming le. GOOD LUCK EVERYONE!

SDG's practice run

Team SDG had another opportunity to practise their XD games today, with Joe and Jean around to observe and give their feedback.

Joe and Jean did such a good job that I basically had nothing much left to say :)

Anyway, I'm able to help you guys from SDG in some of the highlighted areas, including
- stage presence
- game instructions and rules
- facilitation (I have some ideas to make things easier for the facilitators)

But for now, concentrate on your exams first :)

P.S. A big "thank you" to all of you who came down today, and a "thank you" to ELPAM for volunteering to help out with SDG's event. It's encouraging to see you guys stepping in to help out, even though you're not required to.

Anyway, wanna say tt 'I Luv Coleman'. Not tt kind of love (duh), but love his presentation!! Way to go Coleman. It was a really meaningful presentation that really awaken the inside of me. Sort of. *Claps Claps*

I really liked the short and sweet style of the presentation, so unlike what we always do. I think we should really learn from there. It's nice to hear abt the thinking and thinking and thinking thingy. I think I'm a person who thinks a lot too. Esp about wad other's actions mean to me, what others think of me etc. So ^5. Let's think together.

N the one about 'who to listen to..'. Cause everyone would give u different opinions about different issues as everyone has different perceptions. So sometimes, I think we should really ask ourselves what do we exactly want. N the part whereby we only hear the heartbeat when we listen to our heart is soo hilarious. Haha. Luv tt one especially.

Den there's something about Coleman talking abt his frens who passed away back in those years. Expected Coleman to be very emotional when talking abt tt, and yea. A bit emotional. But I think we really learnt a lot from there, to treasure our lives and do whatever we want to before time's running out. So yep, just do it is rite.

Last of all, the part about the 5Cs and 1 non-C. Haha. Think I nid to build Up confidence after hearing abt it during my exit interview.

Thankx Coleman and Max for the whole of the I & E journey. THink I'd really learnt a lot. ^^

THINK, THINK, THINK, but not too much...

Seriously, i gave a good thought over what Coleman had said during the official last day of our I&E journey. I realized that he’s the kind of silent killer in those movies, hahaha, given his ability to THINK (thank god he didn’t fall to the dark side, haha). I’m also glad to find somebody who thinks that he thinks so much that sometimes the real task on hand didn’t get done. Sometimes, I just procrastinate too much and opportunities are lost. “Just do it” we may say but how many of us really got the courage to “just do it”. Maybe I need to come out of the box I put myself into, I found out that I can only expressing more freely without strange stares from people, I need to build on a different kind of confidence, I must say. =) Thx Coleman.

The way he planned the slides is simply remarkable (once again showing us he knows what’s the general response of the crowd), expecting us to laugh at which slides and continue with “this is serious business!” haha, interesting. Also, I must say the friends he mentioned during the slides, that part hit me hard. I thought, yeah, value our (my) life, often we (I) always say “damn sian, wah lao, life su*ks” This once again reminded me another story, a girl always complained that she does not have enough shoes to wear, until one day she saw a man without any legs. We must treasure lives, (haha, heard this over and over again.) even though you may believe your life su*ks, but once you think of people worse off than you, you may start to think again, is it really su*kie as I thought? Thx Coleman.

The “system”- I talk this topic among my friends a lot, “the system we are in, the whole society we are in is flawed, and it needs more improvements, etc” (and sometimes I just cursed and swore) Coleman touched it again, in a more subtle way, “who’s advice to listen?” “hidden agenda?” well, I can’t talk about this much, cause I’m just another failed product of this system, I cannot complain much about it because this will be posted on somewhere where a lot people can see, I’m cautious, haha. What I want to conclude is that, just make the best out of this “system”, try to THINK for yourself, what’s wrong and what’s right, rather than allowing yourself to be part of the flawed system. And this I&E module is something different from what I have learnt from this “system”. Thx Coleman. Clap Clap Clap. HOOOOO. JTYS =)

I dunno if I noe that I got inspired by his talk... maybe I did but I haven't figure out yet. But Coleman sure gave a talk which I would say was interesting and funny with this sense of humor in it. He plays with words like "I think a lot. I think I think a lot." n these gives this humorous effect. well, he may not talk a lot, but can see that he observes a lot(if I'm not wrong). thnx for being there when we held our boardgame playing, though U din play... okay.. all were supposed to play, especially chee hao.
Max, thnx for being my mentor for this module. I sure din regret choosing this class(although I is randomly pick de cuz no more EM). U have guided ELPAM thru the whole thing, not exactly directly telling us the answer but just letting us find it ourselves.

I feel tt it would have to be my courage
I mus say tt at the start of the module i do nt have lots of courage to do things which i have done during the 16 weeks. It does take courage for me and my grp mates to approach the principal and talk to her abt our plans with the kids. We do not noe if the principal will like our ideas and all questions tt she may be askin us. Mounting the activity and teaching the kids to paint and design also require courage. Through communicatin with the kids, we are able to gather more courage everytime we speak to them. Our activity may only last abt 2 hrs, but without this 2 hrs, we would not have gained more courage. And i mus agree with some of the classmates tt without courage, i would nt have done or learnt anything.

Hmmm the c i developed most shld be creativity ba..
Most IS also let us have chance to build up creativity.. but i&e let us organise events and somehow do our own business... so this enable me to have a chance to tink about wat to do and brainstorm with my groups to design the games and make a innovative event =)

Some other Cs i develop is collaberation... my grp is a 8 man team... surely each and every1 have diff interest different point of views... however till now we are still working great together without and dispute or conflict... yea so can say Every1 in the grp collaberate well...!

Coleman and myself will be giving you an exit interview which can either be personal (Coleman and myself to you) or public (as a class), let me know which is your preference.

the c that i've developed would have to be Confidence,Courage and perhaps,Character.

i think it takes quite abit of courage and confidence to actually talk to a principal and 'market' your idea to her. deciding on meeting her already takes quite a bit of courage(for me).and it was nerve-wreaking to go down to the childcare cause we dont know what the principal expected of us.and we had to anticipate the kind of questions she'll ask and try to think of answers to them.
and through this, i think i have more confidence than before.i came to know the importance of confidence, when speaking to the principal and to the fellow classmates when presenting our ideas.and once i speak, i will loss some of the nervous-ness.

i've developed character too. through this module, i really learnt alot and i've also learn to take initiatives instead of waiting for people to ask me to get things done. nothing's going to work out if u just wait for one another.and to me, i learnt that its better to get things done if we put our heart to it.

A Little To Share About Our Activity..

The day at our school's NTUC Childcare Centre.
Though many of you came to support,
but could not stay in the centre long.

Here are some interesting things and experiences that i hope to share.
Children, kids, boys or girls,
They are not as easy as they are till they show their true self.
Many of us might think they very easy to handle.
Nope, totally not,
They are very playful.
But luckily the good thin is that they are cute. =X

The day of activity (Photo Frame Painting Art Workshop),
where our Five Cs developed.
Creativity, Collabration, Character, Confidence and Courage.

Creativity,
Together with the children,
We developed our creativity together!
They paint their photo frame differently.
Four sides of the frame, all different colour.
Some even use the brush to "dot" on the photo frame to make different designs.
The funniest thing here was Zhengji's group of kids,
They mix all the poster colours together and it ended up to be black,
And his groups photo frames were all BLACK!
In this process,
We learn from their creativity too.

Collabrations,
During our intro sessions,
We asked for their names, favourite colours and animals.
Trying hard to get everyone to say out their part,
And this one kid, kept talkin to me about his KING KONG movie.
Oh my god! But we listen to him for a while,
Well, after that he stop and we were able to continue smoothly.
Part of collabrations?
Giving in to his stories so that together with the kids we worked towards our objectives.

Confidence!
To make it a success!
We enter the centre with confidence to teach the children to paint their own photo frames.
If no confidence,
Maybe we are still sitting in InnoSpark thinking of a activity!

Courage,
Courage to apporach the principal to present our idea,
Courage to talk to the staffs,
Courage to communicate with the children,
Courage to mount this activity.

Character,
Most important thing in this activity is that we must have Patient.
Patients with kids, slowly talk to them,
Put up with their stories, their playfulness,
Or we might end up creating troubles there instead of teaching.

Well, this thursday there will be more to find out about our journey.
The long journey.
And most importantly our Ups and Downs.
Share failures not just success.

THE C I DEVELOPED MOST?

The C that I managed to develop most would have to be courage( though most of the time I still lack of some). :p

Its hard not to have courage when mounting an event cos its like you jus got to speak up and present the best to everyone out there. For instance, I had no idea what to say to the kids and how to get the balls rolling during the workshop. There’s no other choice but to think of something and build up your courage to get things started. Without courage, I guess nothing could be accomplished. :C

I personally feel that the C that i've developed most is that of Collaboration.

Collaboration
A partnership approach that relies on an open exchange of information. It is dependent on mutual respect, and is aimed at supporting service users to gain some control in decision making.

I will now go through the definition and why i chose this to define my essay.

Partnership. I believe that I've a bunch of REALLY nice people in my Team SDG. I dare admit that I haven't been doing much, but i will do what i can from now to help everyone. Not just the team, EVERYONE. Moreover, i think that within my means, I've learnt to collaborate with people, or should i say, honestly, when I am busy with other things, how my Team supported me and filled up my absence. I'm really grateful for it, Team.

Open exchange of information. Sure there was an open exchange of information. During brainstorming sessions, all of us exchanged our information. Superior information. And that is our Creativity. All of us came up with ideas, and sure some were shot down, some were expanded, and now we have what we have Xtreme Dominos, or X'DMN. I, personally, am looking forward, very much, to our mounting of event. I can't wait to bring the house down at BLSS with our games, really hope they'll enjoy it.

Mutual Respect. Come on, all of us just love each other. heh. Notice the laughter and the smiles on our faces, what more can I say?

The rest of the definition just came together with the above three points that i touched upon. And i respect the website by not editing the definition. (ahhh i'm just lazy.)

Creativity,
Well i've always been creative, at least i thought so. Until i saw how creative the rest of my Team can be, well a little of creativity and collaboration brings about ONE WHOLE f***ing lot of creativity. (forgive me for my language)

Courage.
well... I THOUGHT i was daring... but well, to be daring you have to have support of real substance, and Bryan's friend was it? the Facilitator girl, i can't remember her name. BUT! I respect her i tell you. GL is really GL. The way she speak was just WOOT! yah.. i dunno how to say. But it's just LIKE THAT. RESPECT! I wanna learn from her!! and! i wanna do as well as an MC!! I NEED COURAGE!!

Collaboration? I think so.
It's rather hard for a group of 8 members to work together smoothly, honestly speaking.
But i think our group did pretty well!
Compromising is important so that everybody gets to say something.

Is commitment counted as another 'C'? I guess i develope that too.
I'm a person who hates commitment so this activity kind of bonds everyone together making me feel more commited to what i'm doing.

It was different from the other projects that i have done so far in school. This time i was journeying with the rest on a bonding process and team work to be able to go through this project with confidence when we were needed to present to actionpreuneur and now with the on-going build-up of plans made to be mounted really soon.

Hi Class,

I write this with mixed feelings .... on the one hand, I feel really terrible that the semester is coming to an end because I really felt that I had some serious bonding with the whole lot of you ... I think I will miss you all deeply ...

On the other hand, I am very happy to know with confidence that Coleman and I have rubbed something off to all our students and made an impact to our student's lives. Some more than others ..., but I am certain that all of you had a memorable encounter with Coleman and myself. With that I know my students will move on the rest of the NP learning journey with a difference ...

It has also been an I&E journey for me. I learnt alot more about Confidence. Not my own but having confidence in my students. To know that when you invest enough guidance, love and trust, you will be able to see them grow and for some, soar ...

Next week is my last week with all of you, I wish that you'll all come punctually so that we can have quality time together. Please give me your sharing as sincere as possible, let us have a memorable farewell as we come to the close of the module.

As for Team SDG, please identify the objectives you wish your facilitators to arrive at, no target set, you'll not arrive anywhere ... so, please use this posting and comment your objectives ...

the 'C' which I developed

the 'C' which I have developed most should be confidence, cos at the start of the module, our project ideas were quite conservative and largely confined to the guidelines of health and lifestyle.

But after repeated setbacks, we took the risk of participating in a bazaar, where profits didnt seem to be very positive. Also, I was more confident that I was able to get two different groups of people to work together to achieve a common goal, and in the process, allowing us to know one another even better. Indirectly this also helped to improve the 'Collaboration' factor, since we got along very well and we had no hiccups at all. =)

For the 'Character' aspect, lets just say that I'm more willing to accept different opinions and provide others with a chance to express their ideas better. Well, theres no need for tolerance because our group had no disagreements at all. =D

Well, the 'Courage' to participate in a bazaar selling the most unique variety of food products served us well. After all, this is Innovation and Enterprise in Action rite? And in the end we made a profit too.. =)

the C ive developed the most is constructivism. yea its a little out of the 5 C we were going to pick on but i believe by this it has aptly brought out a few of the other Cs. namely being that with the demonstration of how this method of teaching worked; has given me a flashback of the things i ve learnt through the excitments and disappointments, the laughter, to have fun in all seriousness of the task at hand while experiencing it first hand. I ve discovered through their guidiance sometimes obvious and sometimes completely unaware of my own weaknesses to change into a chance or an opportunity for moulding.

Im heartened by XX's post that it was a good thing that she was the leader because she has definitely risen above the challenge that was given to her and she has so much potential to explore further. three cheers to you babe!

*Deep in thoughts* Felt a bit lost as to what are the Cs that I'd actually developed. Hmmm, think they're Confidence, Character and Collaboration.

Confidence: Hmmm, more or less la. Like maybe trying out new stuff, stuff that we'd never/ hardly come across in the past. N it takes much confidence to actually take ur 1st step into doing that stuff. Hmmm, take for example, event planning. Must first of all have confidence in your event, then mount it. But even if the 1st planning fails, we must boost our confidence instead of... yea. (Can't find the right words)

Character: More disciplined. Time is needed to do planning and the actual mounting of the event. So, I guess, maybe time management does improve a teeny weeny bit. But must admit that it's not much. N yep, learnt to tolerate with people more since we're all working in a group. ^^

Collaboration: Team work. Important factor in I & E rite? Yea. No team work, no gain!! Woohoo...

Which 'C'?

Actually I'm stucked with this question for quite a while. lols. Cos it's like, all also got developed mah.. how to pick one out of all these?

But afterall I thought that it would be courage because I did things that seems impossible to me..

I remember that when i was being sabotaged to be the overall in charge for the actionpreneur project, i was like what? Beverly would be a better person cos she can speak, and organise her things and thought well. I just feel that i cannot handle this. and actually i'm kinda mad with bryan becos i remembered he was the one who said 'xian xu' the loudest.. lols..

but to think that now i have to thank him and the rest for giving me a chance to lead, and plus that i often pray, " God please grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and wisdom to know the difference."

i sure think that it's kinda amazing right from the start..

who knows that i could actually stand up and propose our ideas to actionpreneur and mr chew? now that u have to SELL ur idea, it's really something different from presenting ur project!

but i did it!

from me who doesn't believe myself that I can do it till I proved myself wrong. it's like, a real W0W. hahas..

i learnt that it's not important to let people see if u can do it or not.. it should be that u can feel the changes urself!

i could appear brave when i'm actually not, but not anymore. cos my groupmates, my mentors and God helped me thru this. they are the one who guided me to building up my courage most..

and i'm really glad that our paths crossed, otherwise i might still be the noob noob xx with no courage now... haha..

Its got to be Collaboration and Character

For this whole I&E journey, I've got to say that I have developed character and collaboration.

When our initial plan did not work, we came together and brainstormed for new ideas. WE also looked into finding solutions to solve the problem of contacting an orphanage by meeting during the 2 weeks break and sourcing together for the orphanages' contacts. This time, we found 3 orphanages and tired contacting them on the spot. Although it was unsuccessful, but during the process I've learnt to press on and persevere in finding an orphanage that would collabourate with us.
During our event, which was the bazzar at JTC, there was collaboration with Cliff's other module group members and I made some new friends there as well.
Although our planned event was not carried out, but in my I&E journey, I really had a wonderful time working with the other Gummybears.

5Cs???

Among the 5Cs, i think i have developed most is collaboration and also a bit of courage to face difficulties. We felt lost when we knew that our first plan is going to fail and felt so discourage when everyone rejected us. We did not know what to do and couldn't think of something else which everyone in the group is interested in. However, we did not give up on the plan even after rejected by so many homes. At the same time, we also trying to think of another plan so at least we have a backup if our initial plan does not work. We decided to give up our plan as we were left with not much time and it's impossible for us to carry out the plan within such a short period of time. Thankfully, we are given a chance to participate in the bazaar. For that event, I am the one who collaborate with the suppliers and order the food. But I think there's still rooms for improvement. Although we did not manage to sell all the food but I still felt happy to work with my group mates and also those who I did not know. Nice working together......

LOL, yeah, i feel that i have developed the most in these 2 aspects confidence and courage. max told us that this module hope to develop the 5c in us, Creativity, Confidence, Courage, Character and Collaboration. hmm… creativity, yes, in the development and creation of games, trying to bring the games into a higher level, trying to think hard to try think out of the box, sometimes tried too hard and do things out of the norm. hahaha. Collaboration, just look at how our team does our work.

I stepped into the class thinking that this joker (Max, haha no offence) is just trying to do things differently from the others, talking too much far fetch stuff. Developing these 5Cs, blah blah blah… hey wait that’s the thing I lack of, “confidence” speaking up to others, presenting my ideas. Let’s see what this module can do to me…

Yeah, compared to that me in the above paragraph, I think I have more confidence and courage to speak up to people, about my ideas, without keeping everything inside of me. Those ‘scary’ meetings, got the whole team (or maybe only me) tremble in fear. But we overcame them, though we may not have really strong presentation skills and powerful persuasion technique. Let’s just hope our event will turn out a success. we have reached so far, let's hope the recipents of our project did learn something out of those dominos. =) JTYS

Errr.. Confidence?

ya should be correct..

At the beginning, i feel that i won't have the confidence to speak up to something i find not right. I have the 'Just follow lor' or 'Anything lo' kind of thought. Didn't really speak my mind when i disagree with somethings. Afraid to be shot at (shoot qns hor.. not bang bang! =S), or having my ideas being rejected.
Now not so bad.. well i just say wad i feel then i'll leave it to the leader to decide on things. At least i say wad i think! hehe..

The next point is abt presentation.
Initially i was always afraid of presenting my work in front of others. Fear to be laughed at and tat pple may not like my work. Tend to keep things at low profile.. This feeling still hunts me, thought i could feel tat it's weaker than before.(well improved bit by bit is better than not improving at all) =P
so now.. er... so - so ba.. not so scared le.. Just say wad my audience need to know.. listen to wad can be improved can le.. hehe..

hmm.. i think it should be Confidence..
having to face the Actionpreneur people during the 'scary' meeting the other time.. was like... stressful.. hahaz.. and i need to speak to them.. so.... i need to be confident in order to be able to do that well.. so.. yup.. my confidence lvl has increased..
and.. i also believe that this confidence will be greatly needed during my group mounting of the event at boon lay sec.. :)
even though leadin the students was not the first time for mi.. well.. it was in sec sch.. but.. facing a group of student leaders whom i haf nv met before.. is a weird situation..
thus, this special C that i have developed.. will be of great advantage for mi.. :)

the C that I developed most is arranged in this order I think.. so far ppl say they developed Confidence most.. but not for me. I think I developed creativity most because I've been the one who's been coming up with most of the ideas, from group name to board game to the counters for it etc. ideas that are though of need not be normal. It can be as weird as possible. Dun think of whether it can be done or not.. think of how u can get it done, n modify the idea as u go along to further improve the idea.
Just like our our group name. since all of us play maple, our group name could have been called maple! but then it din sound very nice n was sort of a normal word, hence, flip the alphabets back to front n u get a new word!
Just like the boardgame. those of u who played will noe how it's like. we had to come up with a list for the Health, Challenge n Dare, which wasn't easy cuz if we keep repeating the same things, it would be boring. there were limitations too, cuz initial ideas were to have fruits included too, but it's sort of impossible for ppl to get a whole set of fruits everytime they play the game, so everything was changed to different forms of exercises that would not require too much space.
Just like the counters(those who came for the 1st time wld have seen the wax counters). yes, it's totally made from wax. I tot of this idea cuz it was like haven seen it b4 but din really noe how to do it.. end up burning candles for the wax to melt n drip into a cone made from cardboard n placed into the freezer for fast cooling. but when I tried to remove the cardboard-paper from the cooled wax, the wax was brittle n broke easily, so I had to keep re-melting them bit by bit n re-shaping it with my hands. n hence, counters from other games are used too(also cuz lots of ppl were playing).

I have to share this..

The "C" that i developed the most..
I think that will be Creativity..

Double duals..
We have so many ideas for our event..
Start off with Human "Bored" Games..
Followed by trying to organise a soccer competition..
And finally to our already finished event which is the NTUC Childcare activity..

Each idea we thought of..
We always asked ourselves..
"Where is the creativity?"

Here is where i think my creativity starts to develop..
We did not only just want to organise a activity..
But a creative one that hope to attract people..

We change the gameplay of the many types of board games..
Such as Monopoly, Tic-Tac-Toe and Table soccer..
Instead of sitting down to play this board games..
We change it to a way where the player has to go into the game itself to play..
Instead of using marker for monoploly to represent the player..
The player himself will be the marker..
This sounds creative to us..
But unfortunately we could not carry out..
Because most people we survey think it is too time comsuming..
We drop the idea..

Soccer competition..
Tried to change the gameplay too..
Thought of putting 10 bowling pins behind the goal poles..
To change the game point system..

Through this I&E journey..
I have learnt to to use various methods to discover creativity..
Subsitutte, Combined, Modify..
This is where i think i developed the most..
Creativity..

But having creativity only is no use..
I think the part i failed to develop is Courage..
No courage to try them..
So many ideas..
Yet none put into action..
And end up doing some Art workshop for the children in the childcare..

But luckily..
We ask ourselves the question again..
Creative?
We teach the children to paint the photo frames using different painting techniques..
Then take photos of the children..
And put into the photo frame to give them..
Simple and sweet for the children..
Something for them to remember..

Having creativity is not enough..
Creativity and Courage must come together to make things happen..

The one about board games...

For those of you who are interested in boardgames, especially the less 'usual' ones like monopoly and risk etc, there are a few board games cafes in singapore.

The one I recommend is Pitstop Cafe (pitstopcafe.blogspot.com), which is run by 4 friends of mine. One of them was my poly project mate when we were at NP a long time ago.

You can also check out other board games cafes, like Settlers Cafe and Mind Cafe (sorry I lazy to find their webpage).

I recommend Pitstop Cafe not just because the owners are my friends, but their service is great because they put in a lot of heart into running their little cafe. Tell them you're my students, and I'm sure they'll have a lot of things to tell you about me. Nice things of course.

For ELPAM, you can ask them to show you the types of games they have, and maybe steal some ideas. You can even bring along your game for them to critique.

Also for ELPAM, take a look at "the clear water", another I&E group doing a board game...

sipping cofee n blogging JUZ before i go to sch...haha...hope the guest speaker not boring. hehe. time to blog.

i feel that i have developed most in my confidence level. having ideas without confidence to carry it out is no use. we had an idea of making an amazing race. Elpam had the CONFIDENCE of being able to make it a success and although the idea was a failure in the end, we knew that we tried our best and failed. if we did nt have the confidence to carry it out in the first place, we would never have known the outcome of this idea. having failed in that idea, we moved on to the other idea of making a board game. again, our confidence level was not lowered juz becuz of one failure. we were confident that this board game will definitely be a sucess. we tried our best n ta daaaaaa!!!! as u can see frm the previous post(the postwith the pictures one), many ppl enjoyed our game and gave very good feedback n ratings of our game. if we do get to plae our game todae, we hope that everyone has fun.

PS: the post had many "WE" instead of "I" as i feel that wad made mi develop my confidence level was a group effort and not just mi alone. my group has made mi brought my confidence level to greater heights. i hereby thank all Elpamers and all the wonderful ppl whu played our game!! haha...yall were great!!!!! Constructivist Facilitation

I bet that's what you're thinking right now.

But no worries, the words may sound cheem, but the concepts are actually very simple.

Constructivist, or constructivism, comes from the word construct, which is just another way of saying build. They call it constructivism because education "experts" like to use big words to impress us.

In education, constructivism is the opposite to instructivism (yet another big word).

In instructivism, the teacher instructs or lectures or teaches the students, standing in front of the class going yak yak yak... The knowledge travels from the teacher to the student (ideally).

For constructivism, there's no teacher - there's only the facilitator (the final big word - I promise). The facilitator is just someone who helps the group to learn on their own. The role of the facilitator is to help and guide the learners build knowledge and concepts in their own minds. This is done through activities, asking questions and so on.

This is all talk, but tomorrow, you guys will experience and learn constructivist facilitation for yourself.

I know it's kinda troublesome. The thermometer thinging, taking of temperature, landyard.. makes mi sian also.. y do schools have to organise such weird event?? *sighh*

I would like to apologise on behalf of my team(Elpam) to all of you. As i've told some of you some time ago that you all may not need to come back down on thu. I know it is kind of troublesome for some of you who lived far from sch.

Elpam is ready to launch our board game this Thurs!! Yay. Hope U guys will have fun with our game. ^^ Feel our presence again this Thurs.

Sorry if u all are sian-ed n dun feel like coming for the temperature taking stuff, but hmmm, it's worth the effort to come down. Hehe. Play our game n can forget abt tt temperature thingy. We're all healthy. Our board game makes u healthy. ^^

Finally our turn to mould our event... luckily cliff is taking ECD and we can help out in the event, if not i think our group will be in big trouble... feel abit uncomfortable when i know we need to work with someone we don't know... but it turns out to be fine and fun... nice people to work with... but i think we order too many and we couldn't push out the stock... maybe it's be coz of the target audience.... they might not like sweet stuff compare to us... luckily i know the supplier so we can return all the unsold stock to them... n also thanx for everyone who turn out for the event... very supportive of u guys... n of coz max, thanx for all the pics u've taken for us... guess we will miss ur lessons...

"Giving a presentation is hard. It's always good to go prepared even thought there's almost nothing to prepare. Having good ideas and confidence to sell the ideas are two different things, one cannot do without the other. Excellent idea without the guts to say it means no one will know your idea, having all the confidence in the world to show only an unpractical idea may not work out too. Image and confidence are really important in selling your idea. The strange stares from their eyes, sometimes you just have to ignore. Team is a not just a group of people that will back you up when you need them, they are the one who will make you improve by giving you comments. When you are down, the team is there, when you are driven by sudden surge of passion, they are there to share. It's always good to know there's a supportive team behind you. Together we achieve more."
A mature student ...

"I learnt to always have a back-up plan, in fact, not only one back up, should have like 2 or 3 for in case. detailed planning should also be done."
A student with strong character ...

"My group was supposed to mount on the event, xxxxx. Yet our plan failed and we decided to set our target on yyyyy. Everything went on smoothly, we sent our proposal regarding the workshop to so-and-so and she was satisfied with our proposal. We cracked our brains for new ideas and think of creative ways to perform better in mounting a new event. Our mentor, Max, gave us his opinions on what we should do and he even gave us more time for preparation. Commments and questions could be asked through our class blog and this further brings the group close together. We are not afraid to give our opinions during discussions, and I've learnt to speak up and have more confidence when presenting myself. For instance, I didn't realise that I can actually hold a conversation with the principal?!"
An attractive looking student ...

"I enjoy being in my group because they are the greatest people. We had lots of fun working together. In my group, I play my part being a finance manager, taking care of the details needed for the cash buget. I gave ideas to the team and also comments for the ideas be it good or bad. There's lot of stress because of other commitments in school, but we encouraged each other. If there are not that many other commitments, I believe that our project will be of a greater success."
A strong-silent type student ...

"I&E in action has allowed us to plan and mount an activity step by step instead of rushing through the plan like we always did in our work. However, there are also times whereby we need the help of the mentor. Some of the most common problems that we encountered are teamwork and different thinkings/ideas. In one instance, my other team members did more work than me as they have better connections with their juniors. Different ideas allow more creativity in our final product when the ideas are combined together. Initially, I feared that I wasn't up to being able to mount a proper activity for I&E. However, with the involvment of a team, such a fear is actually overcome. Besides, I also thought that my creativity will not be able to help much in the module, however, as the module progresses, creativity is slowly uncovered. My group is considered united as we discuss with every group member before implementing any ideas. Everyone is responsible on their part. I might had done better in contributing more to the group."

The kids are so super duper cute! The sight of them having tea break makes me go ooo-ga-ga over them as well. Lol. Hope the activity that Double Dual mounted was successful. Now at least I know what actually happens in NP Childcare. N i sort of regretted not choosing Early Childhood Diploma. Haiz.

Week 9 Confidence Check

When I was a student, I didn't bother about building my confidence. To me, being smart and intelligent was more important than being confident (no IS and I&E back then).

But when I started working, I found out that only the intellectuals and geeks (like me) didn't care about confidence. Everyone else was affected by confidence, even if they didn't realise it.

Like, let's say you have some superb idea to share with your colleagues. If you don't have confidence, your other colleague who has a lot of confidence but only a so-so idea may have the upper hand. (Why do you think ang mohs tend to rise faster than their singaporean colleagues, even though the ang moh isn't smarter? No it's not racism - it's because they have confidence and most singaporeans don't.)

Like it or not, confidence matters.

Actually, I typed down those thoughts above after I came across this Confidence Check - a simple quiz to see how confident you are. (Don't forget to check out their tips to boost your confidence and courage as well.)

I'm now a lot more confident than when I was in school, and I hope to see you guys become more confident after going thru I&E! :)

My group, Elpam, have come to a decision of having an event called NP Rush Hour to promote Health and Lifestyle.
Nowadays, people are caught in a web of work and studies such that they cannot do sports such as badminton, tennis or football. These sports are fun except that they are time consuming.

By participating in this event organized by us, they will learn how to keep healthy without wasting precious time.
